1. YBQZ Embroidery Thread for Friendship Bracelets

Best floss for organization
Our Rating: 4 / 5
Skein Length: 8.75 meters

The YBQZ Embroidery Thread is a 6 strand cotton floss designed mostly for floss, but is more than equipped for other crafts. Whether it’s cross stitch or hand embroidery, you should consider this kit. Especially if you’re a person who needs help keeping things organized.

The cotton thread is 100% pure, which removes some of the durability you get with other kits. However, this adds a rich luster that makes projects shine a little brighter. It also allows the cotton thread to stay untangled during use, making hand embroidery much easier. The colours in this kit give a lot to love, as they offer a variety of shades that you might use. The wide variety in the palette can combine with the long skeins to leave some excess, though.

What stands out the most about the YBQZ Embroidery Thread kit is the organizational help. Each skein is pre-wound on to a bobbin, which is labelled with the colour code. This makes it easy to store your thread, without adding trouble to finding the thread that you need. You might need to get crafty with your storage solution, though, as the bobbin can add some difficulty fitting a skein into a typical holder.

What I liked

  • Good colour options.
  • Great shine.
  • Easy to keep organized and neat.

What I didn't like

  • Not very durable.
  • Leaves an excess in some colors.

Pacific Rhino Embroidery Floss Kit

2. Pacific Rhino Embroidery Floss Kit

Best floss for cross stitch
Our Rating: 4 / 5
Skein Length: 8.75 meters

The Pacific Rhino Embroidery Floss Kit is very unique – and we love it for that. The Pacific Rhino kit offers 100 colours, which cover a lot of ground. Each of these colours has a vibrant sheen, while the color is slightly desaturated. This makes the Pacific Rhino kit a stand out, as the colours look very different from what other companies offer.

This kit is great for cross stitch because of it’s unique colour palette, as well as it’s design. Pacific Rhino offers 6 strand cotton embroidery floss that is divisible easily into 2 parts. This adds an extra degree of flexibility that can be very useful for cross stitch. This kit also comes with 18 bobbins for storage, as well as 10 embroidery needles of varying sizes.

That being said, the needles aren’t of the greatest quality, and the storage accessories are greatly outnumbered by the skeins. The threading can also become very loose with use, making these a difficult options for more precise crafts. This can make stitching a struggle, as well as hurt the durability of your projects. The thread weight is perfect for cross stitching and bracelets, though.

What I liked

  • Unique colour palette.
  • Easily divisible floss made of high quality threads.

What I didn't like

  • Poor needle and storage bobbin quality.
  • Floss is very loose.

Sukki Embroidery Floss Kit

3. Sukki Embroidery Floss Kit

Best floss for all your needs
Our Rating: 5 / 5
Skein Length: 8.75 meters

If you’re looking for a kit that you can pick up and immediately have everything you need, this is the kit for you. With 149 pieces in total, and 108 colours of floss, there’s a lot to love in this kit. The colours are very similar to those in the YBQZ kit, although they span a bit more of the gamut and the bright colors are a bit brighter. Because of the wide variety, the Sukki kit suffers from the same issue as inevitably leaving leftovers.

This is where the other 41 pieces come into play. The Sukki kit comes with a pack of 32 size 3 embroidery needles, which are perfect for use with it’s floss. To make threading the needle easier, Sukki also provides 4 cross stitch needle threading tools. This kit comes with an untwisting tool, a thimble for hand embroidery, a pair of scissors, and a storage container which fits 4 bobbins to a compartment. The bobbins are labelled with the colour code of whichever skeins correspond.

All of these accessories combine to add a lot of value to this already great embroidery floss kit. The thread is polyester cotton, which soft but also holds up against water and other environmental issues. Polyester cotton is great for both fine stitching, as well as cross stitching and friendship bracelet making. Whatever the embroidery project, the Sukki embroidery kit can handle it.

The only issues with the kit are mostly in the accessories. All of them are serviceable, but not of the highest quality. For example, an included needle will easily wear down with even moderate use. The storage box is good, but does lack space for tools whether from the box or your own.

What I liked

  • High quality, great looking embroidery floss.
  • Complete with every accessory you could need.
  • Durable, even with tough conditions.

What I didn't like

  • Accessories are of only acceptable quality.
  • A little bit too much floss.

JJHunter Embroidery Floss Kit

4. JJHunter Embroidery Floss Cross Stitch Thread

Best floss for beginners
Our Rating: 5 / 5
Skein Length: 8.67 meters

With slightly less colours, the JJHunter Embroidery Floss kit is very similar to what Sukki has to offer. The 96 JJHunter colours are all saturated, vibrant hues, although they span a wide range of brightness. JJHunter has even thrown in a few pastels for good measure.

The JJHunter floss is 6 strand cotton, and is designed with hand embroidery in mind. The thread is very durable, with little shedding or loosening even with heavy wear and tear. The floss is tightly pre-wound onto bobbins, making it easy to thread and begin using. Much like the Sukki embroidery floss kit, JJHunter supplies a storage box – this time with room for other accessories.

These accessories include thirty embroidery needles, 2 thimbles, 2 needle threading tools, a pair of scissors, an untwisting tool, and 9 safety pins. The embroidery needles are of okay quality, while the rest of the tools hold up well. The addition of safety pins is very nice, providing an extra layer of protection. For people who are new to embroidery, this kit is perfect.

What I liked

  • Nice, vibrant colours.
  • Excellent storage and organization.
  • Durable thread.

What I didn't like

  • So-so tool quality.
  • Fewer colors than other options.

5. ZOUTOG Premium Rainbow Color Embroidery Floss

Best floss for colour lovers
Our Rating: 4 / 5
Skein Length: 8.7 meters

ZOUTOG promises rainbow colours, and they deliver. From fiery reds to garden greens, there are many choices from the more than 200 colours that ZOUTOG offers. Another six strand floss, the ZOUTOG skeins are all divisible to allow for more fine control during embroidery. The thread is very tight though, and the double mercized cotton adds another layer of durability, allowing the floss to stand up to almost anything the normal embroidery project might face.

ZOUTOG offers a suite of accessories, as well. This kit comes with nine different sizes of embroidery needles, a needle threader, a thimble, and an untwisting tool. The kit includes 10 floss bobbins for storage, as well, although this isn’t even close too enough to store the full kit. The floss skeins are pull skeins, though, which makes up a bit of ground. Pull skeins make it easy to simply pull thread through and thread the needle.

The lack of storage combines with the wonderful amount of colors to add a degree of difficulty to this kit. However, a more organized sewer should have no issue with this at all. If you can handle your own storage and you love digging into different colors, this is definitely the kit for you.

What I liked

  • Strong, tightly wound 6 strand cotton.
  • Great colour variety and amount.
  • Pull skeins are great for quality of life.

What I didn't like

  • Storage ability is lacking.
  • Tools are lackluster in quality.

DMC F25PK36 Variegated Embroidery Floss

6. DMC F25PK36 Variegated Embroidery Floss

Best floss for experienced embroiderers
Our Rating: 4 / 5
Skein Length: 8.7 meters

DMC is a well known and much loved brand in the world of embroidery, and for good reason. DMC consistently produces great embroidery floss that can be used for a variety of projects. While this product hardly qualifies as a kit, it is a wonderful package to receive. This 100% cotton, 6 strand floss is silky to the touch, with a great sheen on top. The 36 included colors are all vibrant, and fit together in nearly any combination.

The look and durability of the DMC variegated embroidery floss cannot be overstated. Vareigated cotton has a multicolour sheen which is a staple of DMC, and adds a layer of motion on top of an embroidery project. DMC designs with durability in mind, making sure that their strands will hold up to a wash, machine or otherwise.

And, despite only offering 36 colours, there is more than enough to go off within this pack. Often, more options limit us more than less. Every color you could need is included, with a refined and manicured look that ensures quality. This combines with the fine control that this smooth floss gives you to allow you to quickly reach your state of flow.

The only place where the DMC F25PK36 lacks is in accessories. If you aren’t familiar with embroidery floss, the tools you need, and the storage that you want, then this likely isn’t the pack for you. While the colors are amazing and the packaging looks nice, you’ll find nothing else inside. Of course, these things can all be purchased separately (which you should do). But for a beginner or someone just growing a collection, this is not step 1.

What I liked

  • Great colours with variegated, multicolour sheen.
  • Fine control, 6 stranf floss.

What I didn't like

  • Lack of accessories entirely.

Paxcoo 124 Skeins Embroidery Floss Cross Stitch Thread with Needles

7. Paxcoo 124 Skeins Embroidery Floss Cross Stitch Thread with Needles

Best floss for a budget
Our Rating: 4 / 5
Skein Length: 8 meters

The Paxcoo Embroidery Floss kit isn’t flashy, but it doesn’t need to be. Another 6 strand cotton kit, this 124 piece kit includes more than 100 skeins which combine for a complete colour wheel. The polyester cotton is durable and pliable, with little pilling or peeling over time. Polyester also adds a glossy sheen to the thread, which adds a layer of shine. The colours included are bright and eye-popping, while the darker colors included are deepened by contrast.

This embroidery floss kit also includes 16 gold eye needles, sized 3 – 9. These needles aren’t necessarily better than buying a pack separately, but are more than serviceable for most projects. The sizes include are the standard span, and the elongated eyes perfectly fit the embroidery floss offered here. Threading is easy, and these needles can be used for ribbon embroidery, as well.

The Paxcoo kit lacks anything else but the skeins and the needles, but isn’t overly difficult to store. The quality of the thread rivals DMC, although the shine isn’t quite there. Organization is the biggest issue, as there are no easy identifiers for colours, even on the wraps of the skeins. Paxcoo does switch up their colors at times, so colours may be mismatched between two packs.

What I liked

  • Good, strong quality.
  • Great, vibrant colours.
  • Decent needles included.

What I didn't like

  • Lack of anything other than floss and needles.
  • Lack of organizational tools.

Buyer's Guide

There are a few things that you want to look for when looking for embroidery floss. These are: the material, the skein length, the type, the durability, the colour, and the storage. Determining which is the best for many of these is subjective, so you can weigh them how you’d like. It’s important to be thinking about them, though.

The material is often a non-decision, as most embroidery thread is cotton. You may find other materials, but they are sparse. Ensure that the cotton is mercerized if you are concerned about durability, as mercerized cotton is stronger. Some floss will come variegated, which adds a multicolour blend.

Skein length is also fairly simple: the longer the length, the more floss that you’ll be getting. A skein should be about 8 yards long, with 6 -9 being the most common skein range. Longer isn’t always better here, as it can leave you with an excess. This is especially true when purchasing kits, as you might not use all of the colours.

And speaking of colour, it’s always an important factor to consider. Most embroidery floss kits will keep their shades in a similar palette, making it easy to match. If you like the colour palette, then the kit can be great for you. If you don’t, don’t let the other factors rope you in.

There are four main types of floss to consider, with stranded cotton being the standard. Stranded cotton is divisible, allowing for the most control of the weight and look. Perle or pearl cotton is non-divisible, and a bit heavier – this is used straight from the skein for projects that require more durability. Floche is a lightweight, non-divisble floss that’s commonly used for fine projects. Floche has a very sharp sheen. Coton a broder is a soft cotton with a similair, but less shiny, look to floche.

Durability is also very important. Consider the nature of your projects. Friendship bracelets might go through a lot, while a cross stitch will likely stay on the wall. If your crafts will be machine washed or under water for other reasons, look for a more durable floss and thread.

Finally, remember that your toys must be put away at some point. Storing embroidery floss can be quite difficult if you don’t have an organizational mind. Look for any accessories or designs which can help when it comes time to store your floss.

FAQ:

You can use normal thread for embroidery. However, there are two things to look out for with normal sewing thread. First, normal sewing thread used to embroider is more likely to suffer damage from water during a wash. Second, there are noticeable differences in the appearance of the stitching. This can be used as a tool to give your projects a unique look, though.

The difference between embroidery thread and floss is very simple. Embroidery threads are tightly wound, while embroidery floss is more loose and made of two or more strands (usually 6.) Embroidery floss is usually composed of strands of embroidery threads. Because of this, the terms are often interchangeable. A skein is almost always called embroidery floss, though.

Conclusion

Finding the right embroidery floss isn’t always an easy task, but it can be done. Find the colours you love and the type that works for you, and you’re set to go. We love the JJHunter embroidery floss kit for it’s suite of accessories, range of colours, and durable build. For us, that’s what’s most important in a kit – but we couldn’t fault you for arguing for any of the kits we’ve listed.
